Looking to Save on Your Honolulu Property Taxes?
October 2nd is the Deadline to File for a Home Exemption.
-
Homeowners can file for a home exemption to reduce the amount of their property taxes.
-
The City and County of Honolulu ‘Real Property Assessment Division’ (RPAD) can be found online at https://www.realpropertyhonolulu.com.
-
The exemption must be filed by September 30th preceding the tax year for which such exemption is claimed. (N.B. the tax year will begin July 1, 2024). September 30th is the usual deadline to file for a home exemption, but since this day falls on a Saturday, you are given until October 2nd.
-
You’ll need your parcel ID number. This is the 13-digit Tax Map Key # (TMK)—but do not include the first digit! For example, if your TMK is 1-9-4-044-078-0000, when you apply online, use: 940440780000.
-
It is recommended that each owner-occupant complete the home exemption form separately. The property may cease to qualify for an exemption due to an owner’s passing, or it may qualify for a higher exemption if one of the owners reaches the age of 65 years before the other.
-
You’ll be asked to upload a copy of your legal identification (e.g., driver’s license).
-
The real property must be owned and occupied for more than 270 days as the owner’s principal residence as of the assessment date, to claim an exemption.
-
The 2023 Notice of Assessments will be sent on or before December 15, 2023. The appeal period for these notices will be from December 15, 2023, to January 15, 2024.
